The short answer
A balloon over Marrakech flies anywhere from just above the fields to several hundred metres high. The pilot chooses the height minute by minute, for two reasons: the view, and the wind.

Why the height changes
A balloon has no steering wheel. The wind blows in slightly different directions at different heights, so the pilot climbs or descends to find the layer of air that takes the balloon where they want to go, and towards a safe landing field.
What you see at each height
- Low, just above the trees: villages, courtyards, people waving, donkeys, dogs barking. Many guests' favourite moment.
- Medium: the patchwork of fields, dry riverbeds and the other balloons around you.
- High: the widest view, with Marrakech on one side and the High Atlas on the horizon on clear mornings.

Does it feel high?
Less than you'd think. The balloon moves with the wind, so there's no breeze and no feeling of speed, and the basket comes up to about chest height. Many people who dislike heights are surprised how calm it feels. Tips for nervous flyers.
How high do hot air balloons fly in Marrakech?
The height changes during the flight, from just above the treetops for a close look at the villages to several hundred metres for the wide views. Your pilot chooses the height to suit the wind and the scenery.
Can someone who is afraid of heights enjoy a hot air balloon flight?
Often, yes. The balloon moves with the wind, so there is no feeling of speed and almost no breeze, and the basket comes up to about chest height. Many nervous flyers find it calmer than they expected. Tips for first-time flyers.
