On most mornings the basket settles onto the field like a lift reaching the ground floor. You feel a soft bump, the pilot lets out hot air, and the balloon stays upright while the crew holds it.
Sometimes a bit of an adventure
A balloon can't brake like a plane. If there's a little wind at the ground, the basket may bounce once or twice, slide a few metres, or gently tip onto its side before it stops. It sounds dramatic; in the basket it feels like a slow-motion tumble, and most guests laugh afterwards.
The landing position
You practise it with your pilot before take-off, and the pilot calls it again before touchdown:
- Face the direction the balloon is travelling.
- Bend your knees slightly, back against the padded side of the basket.
- Hold the rope handles inside the basket with both hands.
- Put phones and cameras away.
- Stay inside until the pilot says you can get out.
After touchdown
Our chase crew is already there. They help you out of the basket and pack the balloon away, then it's time for breakfast and your flight certificate.
What is a hot air balloon landing like?
Most landings are gentle. On some mornings the basket bumps, tips onto its side or slides a few metres before it stops, which is normal. Your pilot shows you the landing position before take-off and reminds you before touchdown. More about landing.
